In 2005, the first wine hotel in Portugal, Hotel Rural Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, opened its doors. This 19th century manor house was restored, keeping the original architecture. It is exceptionally well situated in the Douro Valley and features a superb view over the vineyards and the river Douro.
The hotel has a restaurant, wine bar, winter garden, children’s room, museum and chapels. Outside there is a gazebo ideal for meals or wine tasting and a pool overlooking the Douro wine region.
One can observe the different stages of winemaking, go hiking and picnicking. You can also visit the “Wine House”, a museum featuring winemaking relics and a wine shop where you can taste the estate’s wines and buy Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo products.
The “Wine House”, located at the railway station in the village of Pinhão, one of the most emblematic rail buildings in the region due to its collection of tile panels in the main building. In 2009 this project received the award Best Wine Tourism in the category "Art and Culture."
